The attested use identifies Joseph by his standing as a council member: Luke 23:50 introduces him in that capacity, and Mark 15:43 does so as he approaches Pilate to request Jesus’ body.

   Both occurrences use a nominative singular masculine noun to identify Joseph. In Luke 23:50 the APB renders him as “a member of the council” while describing him as good and just; in Mark 15:43 it renders him “a prominent member of the council” as he enters to Pilate and asks for Jesus’ body.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents Joseph as “a member of the council” in Luke 23:50 and “a prominent member of the council” in Mark 15:43. The added “prominent” should not be treated as a separate lexical sense.
