   In John 12:42, the nominative plural form describes rulers who withheld confession because they feared becoming excluded. In John 9:22, the nominative singular form occurs in the stated consequence for anyone who confessed Christ; John 16:2 uses the accusative plural form in the warning that the hearers would be put out of the synagogues. The APB renders these clauses with “become excommunicated” and “put you out of the synagogues.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the term as “become excommunicated” in John 12:42 and John 9:22, while John 16:2 renders the clause “put you out of the synagogues.” These are verse-level renderings rather than definitions.
