Simeon
A son named by Leah, Simeon is associated in Genesis with Levi and is later named in references to a tribe bearing his name.
Simeon is a biblical person first named at Genesis 29:33, when Leah bore a son and called him Simeon. Genesis lists him among the sons of Jacob, and names Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Saul as his sons (Genesis 35:23; Genesis 46:10).
Two passages place Simeon alongside Levi in an attack on a city: they took swords and killed every male, and Jacob told Simeon and Levi that they had brought trouble on him (Genesis 34:25; Genesis 34:30). A further passage calls Simeon and Levi brothers and describes their weapons as instruments of violence (Genesis 49:5).
One account says Simeon was taken from among them and bound before their eyes (Genesis 42:24). Another says that Simeon was brought out to them (Genesis 43:23).
The name also occurs in passages concerning Simeon's descendants and tribe. Numbers lists clans of the sons of Simeon; Joshua places the tribe's inheritance within Judah's inheritance; and Revelation names the tribe of Simeon (Numbers 26:12; Joshua 19:1; Revelation 7:7). Simeon is named in at least 21 verses across nine books, from Genesis 29:33 to Revelation 7:7.
