Job

person People also: Job

Job is a man in the land of Uz, described as complete and upright, who fears God and turns from evil.

Job is the man in the land of Uz whom the text describes as complete and upright, afraid of God, and turned aside from evil (Job 1:1). The LORD calls him “my servant Job” and describes him as blameless and upright, fearing God and turning away from evil (Job 1:8).

Job is named in at least 50 verses in the book of Job, from Job 1:1 to Job 42:17. He would consecrate his sons and offer burnt offerings according to their number, saying that they might have sinned (Job 1:5). In one scene, Job falls to the ground and worships; the passage says that he did not sin or charge God with wrongdoing (Job 1:20, Job 1:22). Another passage says that the Satan struck Job with painful sores (Job 2:7).

Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar hear of Job's distress and come to mourn with and comfort him (Job 2:11). Elihu waits to speak because the others are older (Job 32:4). The LORD answers Job from the tempest (Job 38:1), and Job answers the LORD (Job 42:1).
