Barzillai

person People also: Barzillai

A Gileadite from Rogelim who aided and accompanied David.

Barzillai in the Bible is the Gileadite from Rogelim who sustained David during his stay at Mahanaim and escorted the king across the Jordan (2 Samuel 19:31; 2 Samuel 19:32). When David invited him to cross over and be sustained in Jerusalem, Barzillai questioned going up with the king; after the crossing, he returned to his own place (2 Samuel 19:33; 2 Samuel 19:34; 2 Samuel 19:39).

He is first named among those present when David came to Mahanaim (2 Samuel 17:27). David later instructed that kindness be shown to Barzillai's sons because they had come near to him while he fled from Absalom (1 Kings 2:7).
