The term is consistently a proper name for the location associated with God’s garden: a garden is planted there, watered by a river, inhabited by the man, and later guarded after his expulsion. Prophetic passages retain that named setting in references to its trees and garden, and use it as the comparison point for restored or devastated land.

   In Genesis 2:8 the APB renders a garden planted there and the man placed in it; Genesis 2:10 presents a river going out from it to water the garden. Genesis 3:23 and Genesis 3:24 place the man’s expulsion and the guarding cherubim in relation to the garden, while Isaiah 51:3 and Joel 2:3 use the named place as the comparison for wilderness or land.
