al is a negative particle used in clauses that prohibit or negate what is to occur.

The attested forms occur as a negative particle in clauses concerning destruction, alarm, and change; Daniel 4:16 also has the same tagged particle in a clause whose APB wording does not isolate its contribution.

   Each occurrence is tagged Particle · Negative. In Daniel 2:24 the APB renders the instruction, “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon,” and in Daniel 5:10 it renders two negative instructions: “Do not let your thoughts alarm you” and “do not let your countenance change.” Daniel 4:16 contains the same negative-particle tag within the sequence about a heart being changed and seven times passing over it, though the APB wording does not identify an English counterpart for the particle.
