Sunedrion denotes an assembled deliberative body before which people may be brought, questioned, judged, or from which they depart.

The term consistently denotes an assembled deliberative body, often one before which accused persons are brought and questioned or which considers testimony and makes decisions. It can also occur in warnings about being handed over to such bodies.

1. An assembled deliberative or judicial body · dominant

   The singular forms identify the body before which people are brought, stand, or speak: in Acts 5:27 the APB renders that the apostles were made to stand before it and were questioned by the high priest; in Acts 23:1 Paul addresses it; and in Acts 24:20 he recalls standing before it. The same body seeks testimony in Mark 14:55 and Matthew 26:59, makes plans in Mark 15:1, and in Matthew 10:17 and Mark 13:9 the plural form appears in warnings of being delivered to such bodies.

In the Anselm Project Bible: Across the verses, the APB generally presents the term as “council,” including an assembled body that deliberates, questions people, seeks testimony, or receives those brought before it. In Matthew 10:17 and Mark 13:9, it uses the plural “councils”; these renderings reflect the verse contexts.
