The two occurrences use the term for people without parental care: those to be visited in affliction in James 1:27 and those Jesus says he will not leave behind in John 14:18.

   Both occurrences use the accusative plural masculine form for people described as lacking parental care. In James 1:27 the APB renders the clause "to visit orphans and widows in their affliction," while in John 14:18 it renders Jesus' assurance, "I will not leave you orphans; I am coming to you."
