lampas denotes a lamp used for light, including carried lamps and fire-lit imagery in visionary scenes.

The attested use chiefly concerns lamps carried, supplied with oil, trimmed, or present for illumination; the Revelation passages extend the same light-bearing imagery to burning lamps before a throne and to a star burning like a lamp.

   The plural forms occur with lamps that are taken, supplied with olive oil, trimmed, and said to be going out in Matthew 25:1, Matthew 25:3, Matthew 25:4, Matthew 25:7, and Matthew 25:8. In John 18:3 the APB renders the arriving group as coming with "torches and lamps and weapons," while Acts 20:8 describes many lamps in the upper room.

   In Revelation 4:5, plural lamps of fire are burning before the throne. In Revelation 8:10, the singular form appears in the comparison of a great star burning like a lamp.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB regularly presents the term as "lamps," including lamps taken, trimmed, and going out in Matthew 25:1, Matthew 25:7, and Matthew 25:8. It also uses "lamps" for the burning fire imagery in Revelation 4:5 and the comparison in Revelation 8:10; these are whole-verse translation renderings rather than definitions.
