The attested usage identifies a female child in narrative scenes: a child whom Jesus addresses and who rises, and a young female participant who dances, receives a head on a platter, and brings it to her mother.

   In Mark 5:41 the nominative singular form identifies the child whose hand is taken and who is commanded to arise; in Mark 5:42 the APB renders that outcome, "the girl arose and began to walk around." The same noun identifies the female child who dances and is addressed by the king in Mark 6:22, and the recipient who gives the platter's contents to her mother in Mark 6:28; Matthew 9:24 and Matthew 9:25 likewise place her in the scene where she is said to be sleeping and then arises.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the referent as "Little girl" in Mark 5:41 and usually as "the girl" in the other scenes. These renderings confirm the verse-level referent rather than establish separate meanings.
