Thambos denotes the startled response that comes over people at an extraordinary event or command.

The attested verses present thambos as an overwhelming response to striking events: it comes upon hearers of an authoritative command, seizes those present at a catch of fish, and fills observers after a healed man is recognized.

1. Overwhelming response to extraordinary events · dominant

   In Luke 4:36, the nominative singular form comes upon everyone as they react to the command that unclean spirits obey. In Luke 5:9 it seizes the man and those with him at the catch of fish, while Acts 3:10 uses the genitive singular form in the response of people who recognize the man formerly seated at the Beautiful Gate.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the response as “amazement” in Luke 4:36 and Luke 5:9, and pairs “wonder and amazement” in Acts 3:10. The added “wonder” should not be treated as a separate sense of the term.
