As a conjunction, epan introduces clauses that place a subsequent action or condition at the relevant time: an attacker conquers, an eye is sound or evil, and searchers find the child.

   The form ἐπὰν is tagged as a conjunction in all three verses. In Luke 11:22 the APB renders the clause "when one stronger than he attacks and conquers him"; in Luke 11:34 it renders the eye's conditions with "Whenever"; and in Matthew 2:8 it renders the instruction "when you find him."
