Anomia names wrongdoing practiced or worked in contrast to righteousness, including acts forgiven or from which people are redeemed.

The attested verses use the term for wrongdoing expressed in practice, work, inward condition, and multiplying conduct, regularly in contrast with righteousness or holiness. It can also refer to such acts as forgiven or remembered no more, and it characterizes “the man of lawlessness” and “the mystery of lawlessness.”

   In Matthew 7:23 the APB renders those addressed as people who “work lawlessness,” while Matthew 13:41 speaks of those who “practice lawlessness.” Matthew 23:28 places it within people who appear righteous outwardly but are inwardly full of hypocrisy and lawlessness; Romans 6:19 presents it as conduct to which members had been presented, “leading to lawlessness.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB commonly uses “lawlessness” in clauses about practicing, working, multiplying, or being set against righteousness. It also uses “lawless acts” and “lawless deeds” in Romans 4:7 and Hebrews 10:17; These renderings confirm the clauses without fixing a separate English equivalent for every form.
