aneu marks an action, condition, or event as occurring in the absence of something else.

As a preposition, ἄνευ marks something as occurring in the absence of, or apart from, another element: behavior without a word, hospitality without grumbling, and a sparrow’s fall apart from the Father.

   The form ἄνευ is tagged as a preposition in all three verses. In 1 Peter 3:1 the APB renders the wives’ behavior as occurring “without a word”; in 1 Peter 4:9 it renders hospitality “without grumbling”; and in Matthew 10:29 it renders a sparrow’s fall as occurring “apart from your Father.”
