Whoever Does the Father's Will Is Jesus' Family

Christology Themes

Jesus identifies those who do God's will and hear and do God's word as his brother, sister, and mother.

The Bible says that Jesus calls those who do his Father’s will his brother, sister, and mother. In Matthew, when asked about his mother and brothers, Jesus says that whoever does the will of his Father in heaven belongs in these family terms (Matthew 12:48; Matthew 12:50). Mark records the same question and says that whoever does God’s will is his brother, sister, and mother (Mark 3:33; Mark 3:35). Luke describes his mother and brothers as those who hear God’s word and do it (Luke 8:21). The word or idea occurs in at least 5 verses across Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
