Hearing and Doing Jesus' Words

Biblical Theology Themes

A collected theme of hearing words and responding through action in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

The Bible says that hearing Jesus’ words is joined with doing them: Jesus likens the person who hears and does his words to a thoughtful builder whose house is founded on rock (Matthew 7:24). In Luke, he describes those who come to him, hear his words, and do them (Luke 6:47).

A related saying identifies Jesus’ mother and brothers as those who hear the word of God and do it (Luke 8:21). Mark also speaks of people who hear the word, receive it, and bear fruit (Mark 4:20). The word or idea recurs in at least 4 verses across 3 books.
