Zelophehad

person People also: Zelophehad

Zelophehad, son of Hepher, is named as the father of five daughters and as the subject of an inheritance ruling.

Zelophehad is the son of Hepher, first named in Numbers 26:33, where he is said to have no sons but five daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. He is named in at least 8 verses across Numbers and Joshua.

In Numbers 27:7, the daughters of Zelophehad are told that they should receive their father’s inheritance among his brothers. Later instructions say they may marry whom they choose within their father’s tribal family; the passage states that they did so, marrying the sons of their uncles (Numbers 36:6; Numbers 36:10; Numbers 36:11). Joshua again identifies Zelophehad as Hepher’s son and names his daughters (Joshua 17:3).
