An Egyptian man who bought Joseph from the Ishmaelites, according to Genesis 39:1.
In the Bible, Potiphar is an Egyptian man, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, who bought Joseph from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down to Egypt (Genesis 39:1).
Genesis also says that the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, identifying him as an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard (Genesis 37:36). Potiphar is named in at least 2 verses, both in Genesis (Genesis 37:36; Genesis 39:1).
