A biblical person named in Genesis and Numbers, addressed by Judah in Genesis 38.
Onan is a biblical person first named when a son is called Onan in Genesis 38:4. He is named in at least five verses across Genesis and Numbers. In Genesis 38:8, Judah tells Onan to go to his brother’s wife and raise up seed for his brother. The next verse says that Onan knew the seed would not be his and ruined it on the ground (Genesis 38:9). Genesis and Numbers both report the deaths of Er and Onan in the land of Canaan (Genesis 46:12; Numbers 26:19).
