John, Son of Zebedee

John, son of Zebedee, is an apostle who was called by Jesus while mending nets in a boat with his brother James and their father Zebedee. Matthew 4:21 He is named among the twelve apostles, and Mark calls James and John “Boanerges,” or Sons of Thunder. Matthew 10:2 Mark 3:17

The Gospel passages place John with Peter and James on a high mountain when Jesus was transformed before them, and later among those whom Jesus took with him when he was distressed. Mark 9:2 Mark 14:33 John also spoke to Jesus about someone casting out demons in Jesus’ name, saying that they had tried to stop him because he was not following with them. Mark 9:38

In Acts, John appears with Peter at the sacred place at the hour of prayer and is later sent with him to Samaria after the apostles heard that Samaria had received the word of God. Acts 3:1 Acts 8:14 Galatians names John with James and Cephas as reputed pillars who gave Paul and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship. Galatians 2:9 John, son of Zebedee, is named in at least 34 verses across 6 books.
