Baruch son of Neriah

son People also: Baruch

Baruch son of Neriah wrote and read a scroll containing words dictated by Jeremiah.

Baruch son of Neriah is the secretary whom Jeremiah summoned to write on a scroll the words of the LORD that Jeremiah spoke to him Jeremiah 36:4. He is identified as the son of Neriah son of Mahseiah when Jeremiah gave him a deed of purchase before witnesses and those gathered in the court of the guard Jeremiah 32:12.

Baruch wrote Jeremiah’s words from Jeremiah’s mouth and, at Jeremiah’s command, read the document in the house of the LORD Jeremiah 36:4, Jeremiah 36:8. He also read it before officials, explaining that Jeremiah had read the words to him while he wrote them with ink Jeremiah 36:15, Jeremiah 36:18. The officials told Baruch and Jeremiah to hide; later, the king commanded that Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah be taken, but the LORD hid them Jeremiah 36:19, Jeremiah 36:26.

After the king burned the scroll, Jeremiah gave Baruch another scroll, and Baruch wrote the words again, with many similar words added Jeremiah 36:32. Baruch is named in at least 21 verses, all in Jeremiah. A word from the LORD is also addressed specifically to him Jeremiah 45:2.
