Asa

Asa is the king of Judah who succeeded his father Abijam, first named when Abijam’s death and Asa’s accession are recorded in 1 Kings 15:8. Scripture names Asa in at least 51 verses across 3 books and in two name forms.

The Kings account says Asa began to reign as king of Judah and did what was upright in the LORD’s eyes, while also stating that the high places were not removed and that his heart was fully devoted to the LORD all his days (1 Kings 15:9; 1 Kings 15:11; 1 Kings 15:14). He removed his mother Maacah from her position as queen, cut down the object she had made for Asherah, and burned it in the Kidron torrent (1 Kings 15:13).

During war with Baasha king of Israel, Baasha built Ramah; Asa later conscripted Judah to carry away its stones and timber, using them to build Geba and Mizpah (1 Kings 15:16; 1 Kings 15:17; 1 Kings 15:22). Chronicles records Asa’s prayer to the LORD before battle and says the LORD struck down the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah (2 Chronicles 14:11; 2 Chronicles 14:12). After hearing a prophecy, Asa removed abominations and renewed the altar of the LORD (2 Chronicles 15:8). Jehoshaphat succeeded him (1 Kings 15:24).
