The Anselm Project Bible · The Crux Registry

Acts 20:28 — the church of God, purchased with whose blood?

Acts 20:28 appears as church of God in one reading and church of the Lord in another. The difference turns on one letter in abbreviated sacred names and on whose term stands before church.

τοῦ θεοῦ
tou theou — of God
τοῦ κυρίου
tou kyriou — of the Lord
“The church of God, which he purchased with his own blood” — God's blood? The abbreviated sacred names ΘΥ and ΚΥ differ by one letter, and theology hangs on it.
IThe Reading

What the APB prints.

Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of God that he obtained with his own blood.

IIThe Witnesses

Every witness, on the record.

Nestle-Aland 28
NA28 · critical edition, 2012
θεοῦof God
WH and NA28 read God, with Sinaiticus and Vaticanus. NA28, a critical edition dated 2012, reads θεοῦ, identified here as of God. SBLGNT apparatus (Faithlife, CC BY 4.0)
Tregelles (1857-1879)
Treg · critical edition, 1857-1879
κυρίουof the Lord
Tregelles reads Lord, with Alexandrinus and Bezae; the Byzantine text conflates: “of the Lord and God.” Tregelles, a critical edition dated 1857-1879, reads κυρίου, identified here as of the Lord. SBLGNT apparatus (Faithlife, CC BY 4.0)

IIIThe Blind Test

What a blind committee did here.

The APB's translation committee works blind: it is never told it is translating the Bible, never given a book name or a verse number, and it never sees the witnesses above. Whatever it did at this verse, it did on the language alone — and its record is public.

Committee recordaudit verdict: clean

The APB’s verse reads “assembly of God that he obtained with his own blood.” Its surrounding text speaks of the whole plan of God in verse 27 and the flock in verse 29. At this crux, the printed translation therefore uses the God wording.

IVThe Stakes

The case for each reading.

If “of God”

Reading A gives τοῦ θεοῦ, of God. In the supplied apparatus, WH and NA28 stand with θεοῦ, while the NA28 witness row likewise prints θεοῦ and identifies it as of God. The stated difference notes that the sacred-name abbreviations ΘΥ and ΚΥ differ by one letter. On this side, church of God makes the subsequent wording about his own blood the point under discussion. The evidence supplied here records support for this wording, not an explanation of how the variation arose.

If “of the Lord”

Reading B gives τοῦ κυρίου, of the Lord. Treg reads κυρίου in the witness row, and the apparatus places Treg with κυρίου against θεοῦ in WH and NA28. The same apparatus also records κυρίου καὶ θεοῦ for RP. On this side, church of the Lord changes the possessive term before the clause about his own blood. The supplied evidence presents this reading and its attestation without supplying a cause for the difference.

The supplied material records competing forms and support, but does not provide a reason for the difference or grounds for settling the choice. The two stated readings differ in the possessive term before church. This single wording choice does not itself settle doctrine; the packet does not provide a doctrinal conclusion.

VThe Registry

More places where the manuscripts argue.

Witness readings for critical editions are quoted from the SBLGNT apparatus (CC BY 4.0); Hebrew text from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible). Readings of ancient manuscripts and versions are cited as published scholarly fact with their sources linked above. Nothing on this page declares a winner — the evidence is the point.

Weigh it yourself.

The registry doesn't tell you which reading is true. It puts every witness on one page, shows what a blind committee did with the same language, and leaves the verdict where it belongs — with the reader.
