she.vaq denotes allowing a person, work, kingdom, or remnant to remain rather than be taken away.

The attested use concerns allowing something to remain: a kingdom is not given over to another people, a tree’s root-stump is retained, and the work of God’s house is allowed to continue; the two further imperative occurrences occur in the tree description but are not separately reflected in the APB wording.

Senses in use

  1. Allowing something to remain or continue · dominant

In Daniel 2:44, the imperfect form occurs in the statement that the kingdom will not be “left to another people.” In Daniel 4:23, the Qal infinitive construct occurs in the command to retain the tree’s root-stump, while Ezra 6:7 uses a Qal imperative in the order, “Leave the work of that house of God” to its governor and elders. The same Qal imperative form appears in Daniel 4:12 and Daniel 4:20 within the tree description, though the APB does not isolate its contribution there.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB explicitly uses “left” in Daniel 2:44 and “leave” in Daniel 4:23 and Ezra 6:7. Its wording for Daniel 4:12 and Daniel 4:20 does not visibly identify a corresponding English expression.
