a.vot is an item held in connection with a loan, taken out and later restored to its owner.

The term denotes an item connected with a loan: it is brought out by the borrower, may not be kept overnight from a poor person, and is to be restored at sunset.

1. Loan security to be returned · dominant

   In Deuteronomy 24:10 and Deuteronomy 24:11, the singular noun occurs in instructions that the lender remain outside while the borrower brings the item out; the APB renders the clauses with “take his pledge” and “bring the pledge out.” In Deuteronomy 24:12 and Deuteronomy 24:13, the item is not to be slept in overnight and is to be restored at sunset; the APB renders it as “his pledge” and “the pledge.”
