ma.sar describes committing men for military service and, in another clause, the committing of unfaithfulness against the LORD.

1. Assigning men for military service · common

   In Numbers 31:5, the Niphal sequential imperfect describes men being taken from Israel's thousands for the army; the APB renders the clause, "there were committed a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for the army."

   In Numbers 31:16, the Qal infinitive construct occurs in the clause connecting Balaam's word with unfaithfulness against the LORD. The APB renders the surrounding clause, "They became for the sons of Israel a cause of unfaithfulness against the LORD through the word of Balaam."

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB explicitly uses "committed" for the military clause in Numbers 31:5. In Numbers 31:16 it presents the surrounding outcome as "unfaithfulness against the LORD,".
