The attested use describes an anointing received from the holy one or from him: it is possessed by those addressed, remains in them, and is said to teach them.

   In 1 John 2:20, the accusative singular form occurs in the statement that those addressed have it from the holy one, followed by their knowing. In 1 John 2:27, the nominative singular form identifies what they received from him as remaining in them and teaching them about all things; the APB renders the clause "his anointing teaches you about all things."

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB uses "an anointing" in 1 John 2:20 and "the anointing" in 1 John 2:27, where it is described as received, remaining, and teaching. These are translation renderings rather than definitions.
