Chamai marks the ground as the location of falling or of material used to make clay.

The two occurrences mark the ground as a concrete location: people fall there in John 18:6, and saliva is used there to make clay in John 9:6.

1. At or onto the ground · dominant

   In John 18:6, the adverb occurs in the clause where those addressed draw back and fall; the APB renders the outcome as “fell to the ground.” In John 9:6, it occurs where Jesus spits and makes clay; the APB renders that action as “spat on the ground.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the location with “to the ground” in John 18:6 and “on the ground” in John 9:6. These phrases confirm the verse-level setting rather than establish separate senses.
