The attested use most often concerns an abstract binding relation: iniquity, peace, and love are presented in connection with what binds or holds a person or community. A rarer bodily use describes the ligaments by which the whole body is held together.

   In Acts 8:23, the accusative singular occurs in the clause about being in relation to iniquity; the APB renders it "in the bond of iniquity." In Colossians 3:14 and Ephesians 4:3, singular forms occur with perfection and peace respectively, and the APB renders the clauses "the bond of perfection" and "the bond of peace."

   In Colossians 2:19, the genitive plural occurs in the description of the whole body being supplied and held together; the APB renders the relevant bodily elements as "joints and ligaments."
