Sion is the named setting invoked as a place, source, mountain, and “daughter” in Scripture.

The occurrences most often present Sion as a named location or source: things are placed there, come from there, or stand upon its mountain. Two verses use it in the expression “daughter of Zion,” addressing that daughter in connection with the coming king.

   In 1 Peter 2:6 and Romans 9:33, the dative form marks the setting where a cornerstone or stone is placed; the APB renders the clauses “laying in Zion” and “place in Zion.” Hebrews 12:22 describes coming “to Mount Zion,” Revelation 14:1 has the lamb standing “upon Mount Zion,” and Romans 11:26 presents the Deliverer as coming “from Zion.”

2. “Daughter of Zion” as an addressed expression · common

   In John 12:15 and Matthew 21:5, the genitive form occurs in the phrase rendered by the APB as “daughter of Zion.” In both clauses that daughter is addressed in relation to a king coming on a donkey.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB retains the name in place and mountain expressions, including “in Zion,” “from Zion,” and “Mount Zion.” In John 12:15 and Matthew 21:5, it presents the genitive expression as “daughter of Zion”; these renderings reflect the verse clauses.
