Kleros denotes a cast means of deciding an outcome and, by extension in these verses, an allotted share or assigned portion.

The term most often occurs in scenes where garments or an apostolic place are determined by casting; it also denotes a share, portion, place, or allotted group in ministry, among the sanctified, and in relation to the flock.

1. Casting to determine an outcome · dominant

   In Acts 1:26, plural accusative and singular nominative forms occur as lots are cast and the outcome falls to Matthias. In John 19:24, Luke 23:34, Mark 15:24, and Matthew 27:35, the APB renders the surrounding action as casting lots while garments are divided.

2. Allotted share, portion, or assigned group · common

   In Acts 1:17, the singular accusative form occurs where a man receives a share in ministry; Acts 8:21 places it in the denial of any part or portion in a matter. Acts 26:18 and Colossians 1:12 place the term in receiving a place among the sanctified and sharing in the inheritance, while 1 Peter 5:3 refers to not mastering the lots in relation to the flock.
