Hieremias identifies Jeremiah, named both among prophetic figures and as the prophet through whom words were spoken.

The attested uses identify Jeremiah: once among figures people proposed as Jesus’ identity, and twice in clauses introducing words spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.

   In Matthew 16:14, the accusative singular form occurs in a list of proposed identities alongside John the Baptist, Elijah, and one of the prophets; the APB renders the list with “Jeremiah.” In Matthew 2:17 and Matthew 27:9, the genitive singular form occurs in the clause about what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet; the APB presents each saying as fulfilled.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the name as “Jeremiah” in Matthew 16:14 and as “Jeremiah the prophet” in Matthew 2:17 and Matthew 27:9. The added designation “the prophet” is treated as part of the verse’s presentation rather than assigned solely to this term.
