eso marks being within a place or group and, in inward-person contexts, what belongs to the inner self.

The attested uses most often mark location within an enclosed or bounded setting, including a prison, a room, and a courtyard. Other occurrences apply the same within-relation to those belonging to the judged community or to the inner person.

1. Within an enclosed place or courtyard · dominant

   In Acts 5:23 the form occurs in the report that the prison was secured but no one was found within it; in John 20:26 the APB renders the disciples as "again inside." Mark 14:54 and Matthew 26:58 place Peter within the high priest's courtyard or palace area, while Mark 15:16 describes the soldiers leading him within the courtyard.

2. Within a group or inner person · common

   In 1 Corinthians 5:12 the contrast is between judging those outside and those within. In 2 Corinthians 4:16 and Ephesians 3:16, the form occurs with the "inner" human or self, and Romans 7:22 locates delight in God's law in the speaker's inner being.
