The two occurrences show inward consideration: Joseph is occupied with the circumstances before him, while Jesus identifies what others are entertaining in their hearts.

   In Matthew 1:20, the aorist passive participle occurs as Joseph is occupied with “these things” before the angel speaks; the APB renders the clause “while he was reflecting on these things.” In Matthew 9:4, the present middle indicative addresses a group about what they are entertaining in their hearts; the APB renders the question, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?”
