The two attested uses show sustained public mockery directed at a person: listeners deride him in Luke 16:14, and rulers do so while challenging him to save himself in Luke 23:35.

   In Luke 16:14, the imperfect active plural form describes the Pharisees' ongoing response as they listen; the APB renders the clause "were ridiculing him." In Luke 23:35, the same form describes the rulers' mockery, followed by their challenge, "He saved others; let him save himself."
