Geenna names the place invoked as the destination of judgment, destruction, and fire.

The term consistently denotes a feared place or outcome: people may be cast, thrown, or go into it; it is associated in the verses with fire, judgment, destruction, and the tongue’s destructive burning.

Senses in use

  1. Place of feared judgment and destruction · dominant

The accusative singular form marks the destination in warnings about being cast, thrown, or going into it: in Mark 9:43 the APB renders a contrast between entering life and going “into Gehenna with two hands, into the unquenchable fire”; Matthew 5:29 similarly contrasts the loss of one member with the whole body being thrown into it. Other clauses associate it with destruction, judgment, and fire, as in Matthew 10:28, Matthew 23:33, and James 3:6.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB regularly retains “Gehenna” in these clauses, including “the Gehenna of fire,” “the fire of Gehenna,” and “judgment of Gehenna.” These renderings show the verse-level presentation rather than a fixed English equivalent for each form.
