ateknos describes a man who dies without children or offspring in the marriage scenario of Luke 20.

The two occurrences describe a man as having no children when he dies: Luke 20:28 frames this condition in instructions for a surviving brother to raise up offspring, and Luke 20:29 applies it to the first of seven brothers.

Senses in use

  1. Without children at death · dominant

In Luke 20:28, the nominative singular masculine adjective describes the brother who dies while married, after which his brother is to take the woman to raise up offspring for him; the APB renders the clause “this man should be childless.” Luke 20:29 uses the same form of the first brother who took a wife and died; the APB renders that he “died childless.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB uses “childless” in both verses, once of a married man who dies and once of the first brother who dies. This shared wording is treated as confirmation of the clause-level presentation.
