Marriage and One Flesh

Biblical Theology Themes

Passages in Matthew, Mark, and Luke connect one flesh language with marriage and adultery.

In the cited passages, marriage and one flesh are described as two becoming one flesh, with what God has joined not to be separated (Matthew 19:6). Mark likewise says that the two become one flesh and are no longer two (Mark 10:8), followed by the instruction not to separate what God has joined (Mark 10:9). Luke states that releasing a wife and marrying another is adultery, and that a woman released from a man who marries commits adultery (Luke 16:18).
