Empty Speech

Biblical Theology Themes

Collected passages use language of babble, profane empty talk, empty talkers, and futile disputes.

The Bible’s collected empty-speech language tells Timothy to turn away from profane empty talk and says that such talk advances toward greater ungodliness (1 Timothy 6:20; 2 Timothy 2:16). Another passage says that some who deviate turn toward babble (1 Timothy 1:6). Titus refers to “empty talkers” and deceivers, and separately directs avoidance of foolish controversies, genealogies, quarrels, and fights about the law as unprofitable and futile (Titus 1:10; Titus 3:9). The word or idea recurs in at least 5 verses across 3 books and 5 episodes.
