Contentment

Biblical Theology Themes

Scripture’s contentment language includes food, clothing, possessions, abundance, and lack.

The Bible speaks of contentment by calling for contentment with food and clothing and with what one has, while also describing abundance and lack. 1 Timothy 6:8 says that food and clothing are grounds for being content, and Hebrews 13:5 joins contentment with freedom from the love of money and the saying, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 1 Timothy 6:6 calls piety with self-sufficiency “great gain.” In Philippians 4:12, the speaker says he has learned the secret of being filled or hungry, abounding or lacking.
