Scripture records ointment being applied to Jesus in passages that speak of burial preparation.
The Bible says that ointment was poured on Jesus’ body “in order to prepare” him for burial, and another passage describes his body as anointed beforehand for burial (Matthew 26:12; Mark 14:8). John records Mary taking pure, valuable nard ointment, anointing Jesus’ feet, and wiping them with her hair; the house was filled with the ointment’s fragrance (John 12:3).
