Zechariah, Father of John the Baptist

Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, is a priest in Luke, first named with his wife Elizabeth at Luke 1:5; an angel tells him that Elizabeth will bear a son named John at Luke 1:13. Zechariah is troubled and afraid when he sees him (Luke 1:12), and the people wait while he is delayed in the temple (Luke 1:21). At the child’s circumcision, others call him by his father’s name (Luke 1:59). Luke says that Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied (Luke 1:67). His name occurs in at least 9 verses across Luke.
