A man from Cyrene compelled to carry Jesus’ cross.
Simon of Cyrene is the man from Cyrene whom the accounts say was compelled to carry Jesus’ cross as Jesus was led away. Matthew 27:32 calls him “a man from Cyrene named Simon” and says he was compelled to carry the cross. Luke 23:26 says the cross was laid on him to carry behind Jesus. Mark describes him as a passer-by coming from the field and identifies him as the father of Alexander and Rufus (Mark 15:21). Simon is named in at least 3 verses across Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
