Hananiah (Shadrach)

Hananiah, also called Shadrach, is one of the sons of Judah named with Daniel, Mishael, and Azariah in Daniel; the ruler of the eunuchs gave Hananiah the name Shadrach Daniel 1:6 Daniel 1:7. He is named in at least 19 verses in Daniel, under two name forms.

Daniel made a matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, whom the passage calls his companions Daniel 2:17. Later, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are accused before Nebuchadnezzar of not serving his gods or worshiping the image he had set up Daniel 3:12. When brought before the king, they say they have no need to answer him concerning the matter Daniel 3:13 Daniel 3:16.

The king orders the three men bound and cast into a burning fiery furnace Daniel 3:20. They fall into the fire bound, yet later come out when Nebuchadnezzar calls them Daniel 3:23 Daniel 3:26. Nebuchadnezzar says that their God sent an angel and delivered servants who trusted in him, and the account concludes that the king caused them to prosper in the province of Babylon Daniel 3:28 Daniel 3:30.
