Nahum

The Lord’s Judgment on Nineveh and Comfort for Judah

1
Chapter 1
1 Oracular burden of Nineveh. Book of vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. 2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD avenges and is master of wrath; the LORD avenges against his adversaries and keeps wrath against his enemies. 3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in strength, and he will by no means clear the guilty. The LORD—in storm wind and tempest is his way, and the dust cloud of his feet. 4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up, and devastates all the rivers. Bashan is desolate, Carmel is desolate, and the flower of Lebanon is desolate. 5 Mountains quake from him, and hills melt, and the earth lifts up from his face, and Earth and all its inhabitants. 6 Who can stand before his indignation, and who can arise at the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are overthrown by him. 7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; and he knows those who take refuge in him. 8 And in an overflow that passes by he will make an end of her place, and he will pursue his enemies—Hand. 9 What do you all reckon against the LORD? He has finished it; he has done it. It will not arise—twice distress. 10 For even while they are entangled thorns and thickets, and drunk as with their wine, they are drunken ones—they will be devoured like full dry straw. 11 From you came one who plotted evil against the LORD; he counseled worthlessness. 12 The LORD says: If they are complete and thus numerous and thus cut off and passed away, and since you have afflicted me, I will not afflict you again. 13 And now I will break his rod off you, and snap your bonds. 14 And the LORD has commanded concerning you: No seed will be sown from your name again from the house of your God. I will cut off the image and the molten image; I will set your grave, for they are contemptible.
