1And it was greatly distressing to Jonah, and he became incensed.2And he prayed to the LORD and said, "Please, LORD, was this not what I said while I was still in my own land? That is why I fled beforehand to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in kindness, and relenting from disaster."3And now, LORD, please take my life from me, for death is better for me than life.4And the LORD said, "Do you have good reason to be angry?"5And Jonah went out from the city and sat down east of the city, and he made himself a booth there, and he sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city.6And the LORD God appointed a plant, and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade for his head to deliver him from his distress, and Jonah rejoiced with great joy over the plant.7And God appointed a worm at the rising of the dawn on the next day, and it attacked the plant so that it withered.8And when the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head, and he became faint and asked that he might die, and he said, "Death is better for me than life."9And God said to Jonah, "Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?" And he said, "I have good reason to be angry, even to death."10And the LORD said, "You had compassion on the plant for which you did not labor and which you did not cause to grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night."11And should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than one hundred twenty thousand people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?
